The Power of Disruption
Changing Practice with GAFE
Using Google Apps for Education (GAFE) offers many opportunities to develop new ways to approach curriculum delivery, instructional design, providing feedback, assessment … well, you get the picture – OPPORTUNITY!
At 2:30 p.m. EDT (today, October 17th, 2015) Andrew Bieronski and I team up to deliver a session at the Ottawa GAFE Summit to dig into this topic from a WRDSB perspective.

Ottawa GAFE presentation resources
Well, it is Saturday morning, up early after a long drive and feeling honoured to attend and present at the Ottawa GAFE (Google Apps For Educators) Summit with Andrew Bieronski. This summit is the first ever bilingual #gafesummit and has over 1200 educators participating. I am certainly looking forward to a great weekend of learning and sharing.

Google Classroom Goes Live at WRDSB
This has definitely been a week of anticipation. I am always excited for CATC Camp, our summer self directed, self paced learning opportunity for staff that focuses on technology enabled learning, effective use of digital tools and digital resources.
The first two days of camp have been awesome! Based on an email I received from Google on Monday of this week, I also knew that we were getting close, REALLY close on the activation of the Google Classroom feature of our GAFE (Google Apps for Educators) environment. I had been sporadically checking all week … not yet … not yet. I tried once more just before supper tonight – not yet. I was beginning to feel like this was the watched tea kettle that wouldn’t boil.
As we were setting up for our post dinner newstime, I thought why not try one last time for today. YIKES – there is was – installed and active. It felt like Christmas in August, and was SO MUCH FUN making the surprise announcement to our CATC Camp attendees. I wished I had thought to record the reaction in the room – instant energy, excitement and applause.
Well, this was a perfect opportunity to offer a quick tour and orientation for interested staff. No problem – Andrew Bieronski jumped into action and provided a nice spontaneous workshop. In the 75 minutes following the announcement, staff were tweeting, re-tweeting about the announcement, sharing and exploring. Some went ahead and set up their 14/15 classes and added the first student assignment. My initial observation was that Google Classroom was easy & intuitive to use, and that support needs would be minimal.

Making Discoveries
I am looking forward to implementing this tool for classroom educators in our system. Now, I wonder what the next WRDSB hosted GAFE Summit will look like?

Sharing your Learning: Collaboration
This year, WRDSB teachers Alison Bullock and Andrew Bieronski ran a very successful cross curricular and cross panel collaborative project with grade 4 and grade 10 students.
Full project details may be read [here]. A “quick peek” overview of the project is included below as a point of reference.
The Collaborating
The grade 10 students will provide mentorship to the grade 4 students as they research, plan and write the scripts needed for the audio guided tour files. Students will be collaborating through the WRDSB Google Apps for Educators (GAFE) environment. The role of the grade 10 students will be related to their civics and English courses.
All students, in both grades, will share about their experiences in this collaborative learning project through their blogs. Blogging platforms may include Google, WordPress or Weebly.
As part of the professional learning with this project, Alison and Andrew met with me for a live streamed interview to share their learning and reflections on collaboration, student voice, engagement and professional practice.

The Power of AB squared
After hearing about this intriguing classroom collaboration project at EdCampWR, I was delighted to meet with elementary teacher Alison Bullock to learn more about this cross panel collaborative project with secondary teacher Andrew Bieronski.
The Learning Framework
The project framework is based on the new Ontario social studies curriculum. Alison’s grade 4 French immersion students will be partnered with Andrew’s grade 10 students. The grade 10’s will be mentoring with grade four students as they progress through a summative project which requires students:
- create a physical structure of a museum artifact
- produce audio guided tours in both English and French
- generate a QR code linking to the audio files and
- share about learning process
The Collaborating

Bringing it all Together
As a conclusion to this learning process, the class museum will be created in the physical space in library, where all students connect for a grand finale. Projects will be displayed and the students of both classes involved will meet face to face.
This project is just getting underway. I look forward to following along this learning journey.
Note on the Title: I thought is was interesting that the two teachers involved in this project have the same initials. Given their interest in technology enabled learning and passions for forward thinking, I thought the notion of
was quite appropriate 🙂

TEDx Youth at HHSS
Last week I happened to come across this tweet.
This sounded interesting, so I took action, visited the website and reserved a ticket.
I meet teacher Andrew Bieronski at the door.
The Program:
I was very impressed with the TEDx Youth event that Andrew and his class put together. The program featured a number of speakers well balanced with male/female and a variety of ages. In addition to the tradition voice based presentations, the speakers used different approaches to presenting including music, dance, video and poetry. I particularly enjoyed the slam dunk poetry session with a good message about bullying and a personal presentation about dealing with diabetes.
I was struck by one common element over the evening. All of the presenters were obviously passionate about what they were doing, and their topics of choice. All of the presenters were awesome in their own way, and had an important message to share out to a broader audience.
Congratulations to all presenters, and to the class who that took on the task of organizing the evening. I understand that a similar event may in the works for next year, so I will be watching for details!
