OASBO Triple Tribute

It was great to attend the final OASBO ICT meeting of the 15/16 school year yesterday.  It was my first meeting in quite some time and it was great to feel the friendship, passion, and energy in the room – such a strong sense of team and professionalism.

To me though, this particular meeting seemed to be a marker in time as the close of this school year brings change.  Three members of the ICT family are retiring: Greg Elliott, Ron Plaizier and  Wayne Toms.

These IT leaders are exemplary professionals who have provided leadership, guidance, mentoring, visioning, problem solving and openly learned while forging a strong and vibrant ICT family in the Ontario K-12 education space.

Congratulations to all of you.  I wish you a long and happy retirement. Please don’t stray too far from our IT/ICT family!!!

Innovate and Adapt OASBO Style

There is certainly a lot of thinking, conversation and energy concerning K12 instructional practice right now:  innovate, take risks, leverage technology, collaborate, create content, student voice & choice. Here, here – critically important thinking for moving education to a new and important place.

I would argue that a parallel discussion is alive and well on the business side of K12 education as well. I appreciated the opportunity to participate in the preparation of this article for the OASBO (Ontario Association of School Board Officials) fall publication.

OSAPAC: Four GREAT Resources

There is lots of exciting news on the OSAPAC front. The new OSAPAC website  was launched at the recent  Bring IT Together  conference.   In this post, I am highlighting four newsworthy items.

One of the new exciting Ontario provincial licenses is for Mindomo, web based mind mapping software for all educators in Ontario publicly funded schools. Have a look at the handy “get started” poster.

Clouds and Records

Today I had a chance to connect with OASBO IMPAC (Information Management, Privacy & Access Committee) co-chairs Lorie Hough and Sandra Vieira via Google Hangout (GHO).  The provincial committee is examining school board privacy and records management considerations for business functions as they relate to cloud computing. Today we decided to document our initial discussion and thinking by live recording our  session. There are many aspects to consider prior to transitioning to a full cloud solution in this area.

The dialogue:

I want to acknowledge the work, learning and professional reflections of Lorie and Sandra in preparation for this session. I look forward to our next discussion.

OASBO Workshop: Apps for iPad

At last week’s Ontario Association of School Board Officials  (OASBO) conference, I had the pleasure of presenting a demonstration of iPad apps with Mary Hingley and  Wayne Toms.  As promised to our workshop attendees,  I am posting the list, and links to, the apps that were demonstrated on behalf of the presentation team.
